Courage

Everybody loves an underdog story because we can all relate to the underdog facing insurmountable odds but this is where the relating stops and a wish begins when the underdog knocks down the odds irrespective of prevailing conditions. I always wondered this is. Why do we only relate with half of the story and not all of it? I recently had an interesting conversation with someone, and after a while, I realised that I have not met a person irrespective of age whose life does not reflect multiple victories. And yet, even with all those displays of strength some of which happened as soon as 5 minutes ago, we’re quick to remember our shortfalls from 5 years ago and not our victories. We define ourselves by our shortfalls which don’t compare to the level of victory we have experienced and this becomes our measure of confidence. Why is this? Sometimes the most abusive relationship we have is with ourselves. I understand that it’s easier to focus on the negative but if we were, to be honest, nothing in life worth having ever comes removed from effort and sometimes a lot of courage, from something as a simple genuine smile. To live in victory, we need the struggle to mould us, to shape us. Not for our harm but so that our stories may reflect strength and encourage others, that we may learn what is needed to overcome and lift those who are in need. But first things first, we need to shift our minds from what we think we should be capable of and what capable should look like, to what acknowledging what we are ably capable of. We need to acknowledge that we are courageous and unbound.
